Low morale, high turnover and growing overtime continue to wear down Austin’s paramedics. Now, some city council members want to consider merging Austin-Travis County EMS with the fire department. Austin’s Public Safety Council Committee meets Monday afternoon to consider the issue. The EMS chief sent out a memo to staff Friday, saying he was surprised and was never consulted on the matter. Austin-Travis County EMS serves both the city and county and has operated separately for more than 30 years. Any restructuring would take place a year from this fall.
