Lawmakers Continue Push To Sell Prison, Despite Overcrowding

The Big Muddy Correctional Center in Ina is packed to the brim. According to the Department of Corrections website, the prison has more than 1,900 inmates, the most it can hold. Pinckneyville Correctional Center is a similar story, along with nearly every prison in the state. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the union representing prison guards, says overcrowding can be eased by opening the Thomson Correctional Center, the empty prison in northwestern Illinois the governor hopes to sell to the federal government.
