It also reviews strategies that some states have used to control these expenses while protecting public safety and maintaining or improving the quality of care that prisoners receive. This report was updated in May 2014 to reflect revised North Carolina and Oregon spending data published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics after our report’s initial release.
