U.S. Census Bureau Reports State Government Revenues Decline Nearly 31 Percent

Revision Note
On January 5, the U.S. Census Bureau released 2009 data on state government finances, highlighted in a news release (“U.S. Census Bureau Reports State Government Revenues Decline Nearly 31 Percent”). Subsequent review has disclosed errors in the data: due to a processing mistake, the Minnesota revenue and expenditure data for higher education were omitted; this affected the U.S. totals as well. The data have been revised (http://www.census.gov/govs/state/) and the news release has been revised to reflect the correct totals (http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/governments/cb11-03.html).The Census Bureau regrets this error.
