Do gloomy economics and the coming surge in Medicare enrollment signal tough times for investor-owned hospitals?

Over the past five decades, investor-owned hospitals have carved out a significant niche in an industry still dominated by not-for-profit providers.

Sprawling for-profit companies compete vigorously in the acute-care, rehabilitation, psychiatric and long-term acute-care hospital sectors. For-profit providers are now the dominant players in sectors such as dialysis and home health.

But have investor-owned providers gained a secure foothold in healthcare services, or will this period eventually come to be seen as an anomaly?
